SUMMARY

The course aims at a set of objectives such as: sensitize participants about the importance of extracting knowledge from unstructured data, especially when the data volume is very large; provide knowledge of the main data analysis techniques using statistical software; formulate and solve problems, interpret results based on statistical tools, related to: forecasting models, reducing data complexity, classifying and grouping objects or variables; understand the concept of machine learning and select the most appropriate models for each problem and develop logical and deductive reasoning; increase critical spirit, develop analytical and creative ability.

The classes will be eminently theoretical-practical, privileging the exchange of ideas and discussion of the themes. A dataset will be used to work with the different data analysis techniques.

The evaluation will be carried out through the presentation of a technical report based on a dataset, which will address a number of challenges.

The Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA) is a Portuguese public institution of higher education, located in Barcelos, Portugal. IPCA was founded in 1994 with the objective of offering an optional source of higher education to the population from the district of Braga. The creation of a polytechnic institution of higher education is considered the answer to the local economic and social needs. Thus, being its educational model focused on practice, IPCA aims to instruct professionals with adequate qualifications for the labor market. Its success is evidenced by a high employment rate of its students and a high number of applications for IPCA courses. 

City of Barcelos

Barcelos is a city and a municipality in Braga District in the Minho Province, in the north of Portugal. The population in 2011 was 120,391 in an area of 378.90 km2. With 60 parishes, it is the municipality with the highest number of parishes in the country. It is one of the growing municipalities in the country, and is well known by its textile and clay industries. Barcelos is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a Crafts and Folk Art City. The town's famous symbol is a rooster, in Portuguese called o Galo de Barcelos ("the Rooster of Barcelos").

* By Car (Starting from Oporto Airport):
- Leave the Airport and take the Highway A41;
- Exit number 1 to Highway A28, direction Viana do Castelo/Vila do Conde;
- Exit number 18 to Highway A11, direction Braga/Barcelos;
- Exit number 3 to take the Route N103, direction Barcelos;
- Take the exit signposted IPCA Campus. You have arrived at your destination!

* By Train (Starting from Oporto Airport):
- At the Airport you can find the subway station. Take the violet subway line towards Porto-Campanhã;
- At the station Porto-Campanhã take Regional/InterRegional trains toward Barcelos. (Advisable);
- Barcelos train station is 2 km away from the IPCA. At the train station, you can find taxis that you can use to reach the IPCA Campus.
